How much do you tip in a resturant?

BigD asked:

I tip 25-30% for exceptional service, 20% for good service, 15% for average service and take-out, and down to 0% for terrible service. But then again, I’ve worked in the buisness so I know how hard it is. Most people don’t know that waiters only make $2.83/hour.

How much do you tip. Also, have you ever worked in the resturant industry? People who are lousy tippers typically have never worked in a resturant.

i tip like you, and yes i work in the Field.

According your scale I pay: exceptional service : $1, average $0.25 and terrible 5 cents

It depends on the service for me. I have left a tip of 50% before because of the awesome service. Most of the time, they get 10%. I start at 50% and work my way down when the server doesn’t do something right, or explain why our food is taking so long, etc.
No, I have never worked in that industry.

I have worked in the restuarant industry…. its demanding, fun… and wears the feet out! As for tipping, it depends on the location, the service, attentiveness. The percentages you quoted are fair… but I remember, a waiter/wwaitress did not COOK the meal… but making sure everytrhing was smoothe and presented timely, and not overly done… that is what counts… I usually keep it around 15-20% for average restaurants.

it depend on service they provide… and if. they already added service charges on bill .. then not even signle cent as TIps

If it is a lunch or dinner meal, I normally tip at least 20% on the total bill (including tax). If it’s breakfast or an inexpensive meal, I will normally tip at least $5. I just can’t see leaving a miniscule tip based on the amount charged for the meal, since it requires the same amount of service. I worked as a hostess, never as a waiter/waitress. I know the work is hard, and customers can be a pain in the behind. Kudos to all the waiters and waitresses that do a great job!

Most restaurants like to be tipped 10% but real nice people tip more.

Depending on the total amount of the bill and the service decides a good or bad tip. I have never worked in a resturant and never will but I know how good customer service is important and that’s something many people consider when it’s tip time.

I have worked in fast food and received tips. But never worked in a resturant for tips.

For great service I double the tax and add a dollar or two.
I also fill out the comment card or request a comment card or phone number to compliment the server and staff. I always pray that this leads to better raises or better hours for the server and makes him/her feel good.

I usually double the tax for average service.

For poor service I take a dollar away from the double tax.

I always leave a tip even if the service really sucked.

I usually leave an 18% tip – I have never been a waitress, and I never want to, but I have worked with them closely as a F&B Cashier in the casinos in AC. At the time, the “going” tip rate in the casinos was 15% of the tab (before tax) – I’ve never really heard that there has been an “increase” in this, but since it was 18 years ago and the cost of living has SOARED – I have gone up to 18% for good service – 20% for excellent and much less for lousy service.

I tip per service. I also take into consideration the rest of the resturant service.

I have worked in the service…a lot…from waitress to manager.

I will never leave a penny or small amt for bad service. EVER. I dont know what that person is dealing with in their live…why they are hateful…why they did a poor job or whatever. But if its good….I will tip all involved…

if the steak is perfect, I tip the cook. If the seating is prompt and I am greeted and spoken to nicely, I will tip the hostess….if the service is good…I am an OVER TIPPER!! Servers have a tough job….respect it please!!

Anywhere from 15-30 percent it depends, but I am a server myself too. I take everything into consideration, I never blame what the meal looks like on the server, but if it doesn’t look or taste good I will let them know about it and hopefully they will do what they have to to get it right. Unless they are downright rude, I leave them a pretty great tip. I also understand when it’s busy not to treat the server like I am the only table he/she has and run them around like crazy…and then leave a dollar at the end like they’re supposed to act all grateful. The whole thing is that server has to tip out other people like the bartender and bussers, and some restaurants even tip the hostess, a certain percentage of their sales for that night…and if you don’t tip because you are cheap, they still have to tip out a percentage of their sales. Servers in this area make about $2.30 an hour too, it just depends on where you live. I suggest if you don’t have enough money to tip your server to go to McDonalds or some fast food restaurant, nothing sucks worse then people who don’t tip or tip like crap.

I always go with my family – $1.00 per person for average service. $2.00 per person for good service. $10.00 total for excellent service

15% usually. 20% for places where food is cheap (as servers don’t make as much as fancy places).

I’ve never worked in a restaurant.
